2016 Translation Events in Spain and Portugal

Barcelona_translation_conference

By Maeva Cifuentes

We often hear that attending translation conferences is an important investment in our career.  It’s true, attending a conference is certainly an excellent way to stay up-to-date on the quickly evolving translation industry, learn from industry experts, network, and even present your research. Though attending these translation events can quickly become expensive (if you amass travel expenses, hotel, food, the cost of the conference itself, etc.), there are ways to keep the costs manageable. This year, I’ve chosen to stay (mostly) local and will attend conferences that aren’t too far from me in an attempt to mitigate the time and money involved. After carefully going over this year’s events, I found three that interest me the most. If you’re located in the Iberian Peninsula, you may want to consider attending these conferences too!

I Congreso de APTIC (Associació Professional de Traductors i Interprets de Catalunya)

http://www.aptic.cat/activitat/aptic16/

April 8-9, Barcelona, Spain

€150

This is APTIC’s first translation conference. The central focus will be on science, literary translation and interpretation. The conference is open to both students and professionals, and will include round-table discussions, workshops, and presentations. There will be presentations in Catalan, Spanish and English, and interpreters available for those who aren’t fluent in one of the languages. I’m most excited about the “Working in the Room” course by Chris Durban. You get a discount for being an APTIC member.

APTRAD’s 1st International Translation and Interpreting Conference

http://www.aptrad.pt/conference/conference.php

June 18-19, Porto, Portugal

€ 190 until April 30th, 220€ until June 10th, and € 280 until June 17th

Another first for this translators & interpreters association. This one is imperative for those interested in the professional aspect of translation. There will be presentations about time management, working with clients, professionalism, pricing (if you missed Chris Durban in the APTIC Conference, you can catch her here!), and even a yoga session for translators. This one is really exciting and relevant to what many of my blog readers are looking for. There will be a whole score of presentations in both Portuguese and English. The prices include the 2-day conference and 2 lunches, and they offer student prices, group discounts and member discounts.

Mediterranean Editors & Translators (MET)

http://www.metmeetings.org/en/presentation:802

October 13-15, Tarragona, Spain

€210 until September 2nd

This annual MET meeting is falling on its twelfth consecutive year. As yet they only have the preliminary program up as their call for speakers is still open, but so far they have a superb assemblage of keynote speakers, including Mary Norris, star of the “Comma Queen,” a favorite video series of mine broadcast by the New Yorker, and seasoned writer and proofreader. There will be presentations on the business side of translation and workshops on editing and resolving terminology issues.

I’m really excited about these conferences this year, and I hope to see some of you there! Leave some comments if you know of any other translation-related events this year in the Iberian Peninsula.
